How can I improve my study habits?”
Hmm, I think I’ve tapped into the strongest nerve of all the students out there. This question has always excited me immensely. For some time, I used to feel like these would be my diligent study hours. I’m sure many of you have struggled with study habits too. We sit in front of books, but making our minds go through the letters is very difficult. I used to find excuses to delay or postpone reading. So, let’s address this question of how to improve study habits or find the best ones.
The first tip is:
1. Doing research on what time fits you the most
This is the first thing every student must understand. It’s often said that early morning hours work best for studying since it’s the most peaceful time. Yes, that’s true; it’s the most silent hour, but not all students are comfortable studying at this time. For me, studying in the morning never quite clicked. Somehow, I remember things better during my most active hours. So, you have to identify which time of day allows you to focus more. Also, some students have a favorite place in their house where their minds relax, making learning easier. These things may seem trivial, but once you incorporate them, you’ll understand. If you’re not already following these techniques, give them a try. They work like magic.
2. Making up the mind first
Even if you choose the right time and place to study, what’s the use if your mind and body aren’t in sync? Before sitting for study hours, prepare your mind to focus for a certain period and on specific topics. Train your mind by setting clear intentions for your study session.
3. Proper planning on what to study
This is the most important step. For me, I prefer to make monthly or 45-day plans. Exams usually occur in 45-day cycles. So, I check my monthly planner to see which exams are approaching. Based on the syllabus, I split it up to ensure completion one or two weeks prior to exams. This way, I complete the exam syllabus and have some time left for revision. I’ve instilled this habit in my children too, and it works great.
4. Splitting the time accordingly
Sitting for hours in front of a book, with your eyes on the alphabets but your mind elsewhere, is a common issue. Our consciousness makes us sit in front of books because we feel the need to study due to an upcoming exam. However, our minds may resist. To combat this, divide your time and take a 5-minute break every 30 minutes. Ensure you strictly follow the 5-minute break rule. Also, only allocate content that you can finish in 2 to 3 hours. This gives you a sense of completion and achievement, preventing your mind from losing hope.
5. Sitting diligently to complete
Above all, what’s most important is sitting in front of a book with your mind focused on the content. If you don’t do this, nothing else matters.
6. Revise and validate how much you’ve learned
Many of us skip this part of our study habits. We may think that because we spent so much time studying, we’ve understood everything. However, that’s not true. Until you validate what you’ve learned for that session, it’s still incomplete. When you start revising, that’s when true learning begins. You’ll be surprised at the gaps you identify. So, make sure to revise and validate whatever you’re studying.
I’ve come to the end of my piece. I hope this will help you improve your study habits and effectively implement them in your day-to-day study life. Remember, no guidance works until you fix your mind and implement it strictly. The more you practice, the more techniques you’ll identify, and you’ll improve without expert guidance.
